WHAT THEY WROTE:

The date was March 15, 1997.
The setting – Taree Racetrack.
A youthful 22 month-old brindle by the name of Rapid Journey was making his debut.
Although near impossible to realise at that particular moment, it was the start of a record-breaking career, a career that would be long remembered in greyhound racing history
Just think of the immense effect Michale Jordan had on basketball, or the postitives Courage Under Fire brings to Harness Racing – Rapid Journey achieved the equivalent for greyhound racing.
I will never forget the crowd on Melbourne Cup night at Sandown Park in November last year. Could the champ do it? Could he overcome box six, and a red hot pack of greyhounds?
The lids opened. The race was as good as over… Rapid Journey had jumped perfectly and was straight on the bunny.
As I looked around, people who betrayed the champ threw their tickets down, humble in defeat. The strange thing is that many weren’t upset, as they knew they had witnessed a champion.
As the brindle Flyer entered the home straight, applause broke out. It became impossible to not get caught up in the excitement.
Fourteen days later, were spoilt again. Rapid Journey this time drew favourably, and the 98 TOPGUN seemed his own.
The ‘Castleragh Crusher” again began beautifully, but the challenge was not yet over as Tom Meuman’s Fiery Sal was breathing down the champ’s neck. It looked as though his reign was over.
But, like all champions, his will-to-win would prevail.
With his win in the TOPGUN, Rapid Journey became the highest stake earner in greyhound racing history.
It would be the last of his appearances on a racetrack. He was being heralded as the champ of the champs.

Never write off a champion truer words were never spoken and what a spring for champions we have just seen.
In horse racing we might Might and Power, in harness racing we had Christian Cullen and our own code of racing had Rapid Journey – and didn’t he do the sport proud?
A lot of experts said he wasn’t entitled to lead to the first turn from the six trap in the Melbourne Cup but that’s just what makes a champion a champion – they do things on the race track that ordinary dogs aren’t entitled to do.

@ w/e 15/1/04   Rapid Journey finished EIGHTH  in the National Sires List for 2003 – and of interest is the fact that 3 of the Australian Top Broodbitches list for 2003 had their statistics boosted by the success of progeny of  RJ.
