Jemalong Jake After breaking in, some really good trials – Forbes 20.07 first look, Temora 17.90 first look, he was sent to renowned Victorian trainers, the Dailly Brothers. In preparation to his first start, Jake ran 19.54 on a heavy track at Geelong, his first look there and first time under lights, then proceeded to run a sub 26 at Geelong and30.14 at his first look at Sandown. The next best on that night, on an extremely heavy night, was 30.46. After all these trials, things looked very rosy indeed but fate stepped in and Jake smashed his near side front leg during a finish on trial at Geelong. The time for the trial had been 25.54. After two long years of physio, lasering and free galloping,& swimming, during which time Jake naturally served some 23 bitches, sent to him by such industry breeding notables as Darryl Holmes, Jason Thompson and word of mouth recommendations. It was decided to race Jake again in order to present him to the greyhound racing fraternity. After a trial at Cowra in good time ( 18.70 ), Jake was set to raceafter two years off the scene . It almost didn’t go to plan, after Jake inexplicably missed the start, but with his amazing determination and speed, he eventually wound up the winner , scoring by 3 & 1/2 lengths inBest Of Day time of 18.87. He’d beaten race experienced dogs, some with more than 20 wins, in hismaiden win !! Jake didn’t miss the kick the next week,BREAKING THE TRACK RECORD, running 18.64 ., at nearly four years of age. Jake’s next run was at Bulli where he scored in 27.09 on a bog track and followed that up with an equal Best Of Meeting time win in 26.47. Jake shared the time honours that night with the very good bitch, Winsome Dollars , a winner of 27 races and some $ 170,000 in prizemoney. Jake’s leg was injured again at his next Bulli run and the decision was made that despite the dog’s brilliance, time was up on the racetrack, with his record reading 5 starts for four wins, including a track record and the owners wondering what could have been barring that injury. |
